A Time of Thanksgiving
The wet and soggy days of this past summer have definitely gone south and the brilliant colors of fall have faded to a dappled muddy camouflage - sort of. The air is brisk and dropping in temperature each day and we turn our faces toward bracing for a colder than usual winter. At least that's what the weatherman - and the wooly worm have declared!
And as each cycle brings us back around to the beginning each year, we set our hearts and thoughts to 'the season'. For those of us that have gone from the traditional American holidays to the more biblically based holidays there can be a wide variety of emotions and situations to deal with.
However, on this upcoming traditional holiday - we can all come to an agreement. There is much to be thankful for!
As mothers and daughters work diligently this day before the annual Turkey Day, cleaning every nook and cranny, washing windows, vacuuming, dusting, and getting everything spot on ... as they crowd into the kitchen to prepare the delicious treats ahead...many thoughts and memories fade in and out of days gone by. Memories of great grandmother making her famous light and fluffy pumpkin pie...how DID she do that? It was sooo good - twice the size of regular store bought Mrs. Smith, layered with walnuts and whipped cream...my mouth waters just thinking about it! And then there is the wonderful aromas that drift through the house filling each and very cleaned out nook and cranny to the point you think you are going to start chewing the woodwork!
Thanksgiving Day is all about memories. Remembering those who went before you and enabled you to enjoy the freedom and liberty that allows you to sit down and share whatever is on your heart with family and friends. Remembering those who served in the military who even now, strive to keep this great country free. Remembering your forefathers who left their own homelands to come to a land that promised so much. Let us not forget to bow our heads before this great and wonderful meal and r.e.m.e.m.b.e.r all those who made this day possible. And let us remember to praise and thank our Abba in heaven who watches all of us and holds us in the palm of His hand. Let our praises and our thanksgiving reach the heavens!
Thanksgiving Day
In the United States, Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. But did you know that seven other nations also celebrate an official Thanksgiving Day? Those nations are Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Korea, Liberia, and Switzerland.
History of Thanksgiving in America
According to most historians, the Pilgrims never observed an annual Thanksgiving feast in autumn. In the year 1621, they did celebrate a feast near Plymouth, Massachusetts, following their first harvest. But this feast most people refer to as the first Thanksgiving was never repeated. Oddly enough, most devoutly religious pilgrims observed a day of thanksgiving with prayer and fasting, not feasting. Yet even though this harvest feast was never called Thanksgiving by the pilgrims of 1621, it has become the model for the traditional Thanksgiving celebrations in the United States. Firsthand accounts of this feast, by Edward Winslow and William Bradford, can be found on Pilgrim Hall Museum.
Timeline of Thanksgiving in America
• 1541 - Spanish explorer, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, led a thanksgiving Communion celebration at the Palo Duro Canyon, West Texas.
• 1565 - Pedro Menendez de Aviles and 800 settlers gathered for a meal with the Timucuan Indians in the Spanish colony of St. Augustine, Florida.
• 1621 - Pilgrims and Native Americans celebrated a harvest feast in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
• 1630 - Settlers observed the first Thanksgiving of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in New England on July 8, 1630.
• 1777 - George Washington and his army on the way to Valley Forge, stopped in blistering weather in open fields to observe the first Thanksgiving of the new United States of America.
• 1789 - President Washington declared November 26, 1789, as a national day of "thanksgiving and prayer."
• 1800s - The annual presidential thanksgiving proclamations ceased for 45 years in the early 1800s.
• 1863 - President Abraham Lincoln resumed the tradition of Thanksgiving proclamations in 1863. Since this date, Thanksgiving has been observed annually in the United States.
• 1941 - President Roosevelt established the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day.
Giving Thanks
Naturally, one of the most common traditions of Thanksgiving Day celebrations is the giving of thanks. Here are a few Thanksgiving Day prayers, poems and Bible verses to help you give thanks on Thanksgiving Day:

Thanksgiving Quotations
"I do not think of all the misery, but of the glory that remains. Go outside into the fields, nature and the sun, go out and seek happiness in yourself and in God. Think of the beauty that again and again discharges itself within and without you and be happy."
- Anne Frank
"Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds."
- Theodore Roosevelt
"Your friend is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving."
- Kahlil Gibran
"Thanksgiving Day comes, by statute, once a year; to the honest man it comes as frequently as the heart of gratitude will allow."
- Edward Sandford Martin
Thanksgiving Shopping
Another well celebrated tradition in the United States is the start of the Christmas shopping season the day after Thanksgiving, known as the busiest shopping day of the year.
Thanksgiving Parades
In Midtown Manhattan, New York City, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is held annually every Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving parades are also held in cities like Houston, Philadelphia and Detroit.

Thanksgiving Football
Football is an important part of many Thanksgiving Day celebrations in the United States.
• The Detroit Lions of the American National Football League have hosted a game every Thanksgiving Day since 1934 (except 1939-1944, during World War II).
• The Dallas Cowboys have hosted a game every Thanksgiving Day since 1966 (except 1975 and 1977).
• Many regional and rival college and high school football games are played on Thanksgiving weekend.
Whew! that's a bunch of traditions and trivia! What can YOU add as a personal, family tradition? Make sure you have a few special ones to pass down to the next generation!

Exercise, Limits and Prayer
Yes, we can be healthy, wealthy and wise - if only we know how to get up off the couch (or the chair in front of the computer!), know our financial limits and stick within them, and look to the heavens each and every day in prayer!
These are the 3 keys that will unlock a new and exciting world for each and every person. Especially in this age in which we live, we need to know how to get back to the 'beginning'. That begins in Genesis! Yes, to know the end, we must go back to the beginning .. and that is actually spoken of in the pages of the Good Book.
Isaiah 46:9-10 The Scriptures '98 “Remember the former events of old, for I am El, and there is no one else – Elohim, and there is no one like Me, (10) declaring the end from the beginning, and from of old that which has not yet been done, saying, ‘My counsel does stand, and all My delight I do,’
So what does that say to you? That Abba has already spoken what the end will be, and we must merely study the beginning (you know - that HUGE amount of pages in the FRONT of the bible that we rarely look at?). Studying the front of the book enables us to be prepared and to be ready for anything that will come and for all circumstances. It is a shame that we have been brought up for centuries to only read the tiny portion in the back of the book. By limiting ourselves to this tiny portion of Yahweh's inspired word, we have become ignorant of how to be healthy, wealthy and wise!
So take time to begin reading the instructions in the BEGINNING so that you will know how to act at the END!

The healing touch of Essential Oils and Natural Herbs
What Are ESSENTIAL OILS?
Therapeutic-grade Essential Oils are special medicinal healing substances that are extracted from various healing plants. Ancient cultures used Essential oils for the treatment of illnesses and for religious rituals. Our forefathers depended upon the handed down recipes and treatments of natural herbs and plants to help aide in prevention and recovery of illnesses.
Essential oils contain hundreds to thousands of different chemical constituents, many occurring in minute quantities, but all work together to produce beneficial therapeutic effects. Where do essential oils come from? The landscape is our harvest field! Shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds all contribute to our store. Essential Oils are oxygenated and assist in delivering nutrients to the cells in our body. The oils are highly concentrated containing profound healing properties so only a few drops are necessary per application (1 to 3 drops). Essential oils diffuse throughout the blood and tissues within minutes and rush to the aid of helping our bodies maintain a healthy immune system.
Benefits of ESSENTIAL OILS
Essential Oils produce amazing results when used therapeutically because they are chockful of valuable medicinal healing properties. Essential Oils help enhance circulation and immune function, assist healing in muscles and lift our spirits. The benefits of using pure essential oils can help in many different areas of our bodies and lives - such as:
• Pain Relief • Anti-inflammation • Antiseptic • Stimulate Immune Function • Regenerate Damaged Tissue • Relieve Stress and Promote Relaxation • For Minor Burns • To Kill Viruses and Bacteria • Calming and Sedative Effects • Improve Concentration and Mental Clarity • Menstrual Cramps and Premenstrual Syndrome Relief (PMS) • Back Injuries • Improve Human Nervous Conditions • Headaches, Anxiety, Depression, Panic Attacks • Clearing Emotional Patterns and Improving Emotional Condition (refer to next section for further information)
Using Essential Oils
Essential Oils can be used in a variety of ways. Some need to be mixed with a carrier oil due to possible sensitivities, and some can be applied 'neat'. Always due a sensitivity test on the inside of your arm before using any essential oil! Be safe, be wise and be healthy!
Some ways you can use Essential oils:

• Applied directly on location, site of pain or problem area • Used in a compress to penetrate skin • Used as a massage oil by mixing with a massage oil base • Applied to the hands and feet at Reflexology points which are areas that correspond to the part of the body you wish to support • Through direct inhalation or dispersed in the air with a humidifier/vaporizer/diffuser/sprayer • Taken orally (only some essential oils can be taken orally, consult with a professional to learn about specific oils and their uses) • Applied to acupuncture alarm points to clear emotional patterns • Worn as a perfume or cologne.
