The New Moon

The Preparation of the Fall Feast Days ~ Elul

Recipes and Tips

The New Moon

The sliver of the New MoonThe Resurrection of the New Moon

The New Moon 'dies' each month and then is resurrected 3 days later…

The moon has been appointed by Abba as a 'moed' an appointment with His people. During this time, there was a shofar or trumpet blown. We can see this in Psalm 81:3. It is a time of not buying or selling as noted in Amos 8:5.  And it is a time of worshiping Yahweh as described in Ezekiel 40:44. Sweet incense was set before YHVH and free will offerings were offered - 2 Chronicles 2:4 and Ezra 3:5. And it is a time of reconciliation as Ezekiel 45:7 sets forth.

So, as believers today - should we celebrate Rosh Hodesh? Absolutely! Consider the following verse found in Isaiah 66:22-23 - "For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord." It is a mandate not only for today, but for the Millennial reign of our Messiah!

Remember, the biblical calendar is a lunar calendar, not a solar calendar, and the lunar month begins with the start of the New Moon, which is when the first sliver of light appears when the moon is in total darkness.

There are many wonderful analogies that can be made between the darkness, or death if you will, of the moon and then it's being given new birth, or resurrection. In Genesis 1:2-3 we see "Darkness was upon the face of the deep...and God said, let there be light: and there was light." Then in Isaiah 60:2 we see "...darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people, but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee." Remember, we move from glory to glory, from darkness into light. The whole picture of the dark of the moon to the first sliver of light is simply a beautiful prophetic picture!

There are many sites out there where you can glean more information concerning the new moon and its prophetic significance. But the simple truth is, we need to watch out and prepare for the coming month by watching for the 'new' moon.

Recipes and Tips

Easy Three-Vegetable Kugel

I love this recipe as usually my garden has an abundance of zucchini! An added treat is that shredded zucchini and carrot add color and lightness to the traditional potato kugel.

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium zucchini or summer squash, coarsely grated
  • 2 carrots, peeled and coarsely grated
  • 2 potatoes, peeled and coarsely grated
  • 1 onion, grated
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 2-3 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped parsley or basil (optional)
  • 2-3 tablespoons matzah meal
  • 7 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil
  • salt and ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Put the zucchini, carrots, potatoes, onion, eggs, garlic, fresh herbs if using, salt and pepper in a bowl and stir to combine. Fold in the matzah meal and 2 tablespoons of oil and mix together to form a thick batter.

Pour 3 tablespoons of the oil into an ovenproof dish, spoon in the vegetable mixture, and then drizzle the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil over the kugel. Bake for 40-60 minutes until the vegetables are tender and the top is golden brown.

Frankincense & Myrrh Anointing Oil
Frankincense

Matthew 2:11 - And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

Frankincense is referenced 23 times in Scripture, beginning with Exodus 30:34 and ending with Revelation 18:13. The Hebrew word for Frankincense is 'lebonâh' and literally means milk-white. The Egyptian term s-ntr is translated as 'that which makes god known'. Now isn't that interesting....even the Egyptians knew that Frankincense was special!

Here are a few facts:

Boswellia carterii Birdw
Hebrew: lebonâh and ketôreth
Septuagint: libanos and thumiama
Vulgate: thus and incensum
Middle Ages: olibanum

Frankincense has long been used for intercession, anointing of kings and priests and to represent divinity and purity. Frankincense and Myrrh has ancient roots in anointing oil and scriptures speak of a 'sweet savor to YHVH'. Both of these wonderful oils blended together specifically forMyrrh anointing purposes will spiritually speak of dying to oneself and taking upon the mantle of a 'sweet smelling savor'. "Remember, your old life is dead and your new life in Messiah is as  a fresh anointing!
