Lavender is one of the essential oils that I just couldn't live without. Well, maybe that's going a bit too far, but Lavender is one of my 7 favorite oils and I'm never without at least a couple of bottles - one for home use, one for my purse, one for the car, one for my shelf out on the deck...so you can see I really like Lavender!
Lavender has a long and interesting history - in the 1650's Culpeper wrote about lavender in his landmark book about herbs and claimed that it was well suited for headache, cramps, convulsions as well as fainting. Lavender comes conveniently in the available form of an essential oil and is so potent it has been called 'first-aid in a bottle'. In fact, its properties are one of the few essential oils that can be applied directly to the skin 'neat', or undiluted. Although, I would still do a 'test' area to make sure that you are not sensitive to even this usually 'ok' essential oil - you never know!
The oil of lavender is antiseptic and anti-bacterial. It is well known to ease the pain from burns and stings and is applied directly to the area. Not only does it ease the pain almost immediately, it stimulates blood flow which also aids in healing. While most people know of its healing properties, it is also a scent that produces a calming effect and can be used to reduce anxiety. I usually put a few drops in an aroma diffuser or put a few drops in a spray bottle with water and it will infuse the air with a relaxing and aromatic scent.
Not only is it healing for burns and stings, and as we see smells good - if rubbed into the temples it can sometimes even silence a headache, and in some cases has been known to halt a migraine in the beginning stages. Want to relieve tension headaches or stress from looking at the computer screen too long? Then massage its healing aroma into your neck and shoulder muscles! It's also wonderful for relief from arthritis or sore muscles. And then of course, there is the lavender scented body care products. Shampoos, soaps, body scrubs and bath oils are now scented with lavender, not only for its healing properties, but simply for the joy of its wonderful aroma.
This particular lavender is a French Fine High Altitude lavender. The scent is fresh and sweet, floral, natural and winsome. Unlike some floral extracts, French Lavender is not the least bit nauseating or overpowering, though decidedly floral. Chemically the European lavenders are quite similar. Linalool, linalyl acetate, furfural, valeric aldehyde, amyl alcohol, pinene, cineol, and various other components occur naturally in French Lavender. English Lavender has higher linalool content. However, French Lavender has a higher ester content than lavenders cultivated at lower altitudes. For the healing properties Lavender high altitudes are preferable. The distillations carried out at higher altitudes tend to produce improved oils, due to lower distillation temperatures.
