Basil Essential oil is a sweet, herbaceous, licorice-like though slightly campherous essential oil that can be used for bronchitis, colds, coughs, exhaustion, flu, gout and various muscle aches and pains.
According to one source, Robert Tisserand, Essential Oil Safety (UK:Churchill Livingstone, 1995), one should use basil essential oil with caution as high doses may be carcinogenic due to its methyl chavicol content. One should also avoid in cases of liver problems. Avoid if pregnant.
The Largest producers of this particular essential oil are the USA, France, Italy, Egypt, Bulgaria and Hungary. It is considered a sacred plant in India, and used in ayurvedic medicine. While it has many culinary applications, it has also been used to reduce odors by strewing upon dirt floor homes.
Basil Oil is thought to be antibacterial, antidepressant, antiseptic, antispasmodic, as well as an aid in fighting all types of colds, coughs, and bronchitis situations.
Basil Essential Oil blends well with bergamot, citronella, all the citrus oils, clary sage, geranium, hyssop, opopanax and rosemary. As a matter of factual interest, the botanical name, Ocimum is derived from the Greek word osme - which means 'to smell'.
