Body Scrubs can be made naturally and easily and are so much better for you (and cheaper!) than some of the over-the-counter recipes with all their chemicals that have been added...many times you're simply paying for the label! So dig into your cupboard and get to making a great scrub! Here are some ingredients that are easy to find - you probably have them in your pantry.
Exfoliater Ideas:
Salt: You can use sea salt, kosher salt, Epsom salts or just plain old table salt. Personally, I like to use sea salt in my recipes, as I know the healing properties are endless, and it's natural. If you don't have sea salt, then table salt is next best as it is cheaper and readily available. One of the great healing properties of ALL salts is that they are detoxifying and muscle-relaxing. While that's a great reason to use salt in all your bath or body scrubs, unfortunately, if you have any minor cuts or scratches, or if you have just shaved your legs, oh my! it will sting!
Sugar: All types and kinds of sugar can be used. From brown, white or natural - again, being one of those holistic type of persons.... I like using the organic natural sugars. White sugar of course is the cheapest and the end result is similar, but brown sugar can be gentler and the scrumptious aroma will have you .. well, eating out of your own hand! It can also be gentler than white sugar. It probably doesn't need to be said, (but I'll say it anyway) sugar scrubs are always easier on the skin than salt scrubs, but salt scrubs are the ones you want if you want to have your muscles relaxed and your skin detoxified.
Coffee: Then there is coffee. Yep, coffee. Coffee has a lot more uses than just your morning pick-me-up! The caffeine even has added benefits for your skin! Some sources say that the coffee grounds can actually rearrange fat cells and is known to help decrease the formation of cellulite. Well, blow me away! Tomorrow I'm going to scrub with coffee grounds after I drink my morning cup!
Other Ingredients: Another great ingredient is oatmeal - I usually grind it to a very fine powder which makes it a very gentle exfoliater and is soothing to dry and itchy skin. Another great lubricator for dry skin is flax seed - which is soothing and a great emollient. Then we have nuts...yep, nuts. If you crush almonds to a powder, they can be very exfoliating as well but if you have very sensitive skin, it may be a bit too much. Then there is also products such as yogurt, buttermilk, goats milk (excellent!) which contain lactic acid and will dissolve dead skin cells and act as a non-granular exfoliant.
