Anointing Oils - should we or shouldn't we?

So what do you think? Are Anointing Oils for today?

Well, those of you that share a few well-worn t-shirts with me after trudging thru many of the various 'movements' in Christianity can understand where I'm coming from. Sometimes when something has been so used and abused, you tend to shy away from it altogether. And that is where the poor little bottle of anointing oil sits - somewhere on the shelf gathering dust bunnies.

Anointing OilBut maybe ... just maybe there is a place in the here and now for that pretty little forgotten vase of oil. Let's explore the possibilities straight from the source - the scriptures.

There are various reasons to use anointing oils ranging from symbolic representations to true medicinal attributes to simply used as a perfume. Many cultures use anointing oils for embalming practices, or for preparing warriors or weapons for war. There are so many applications that can be attributed to using anointing oils it is beyond comprehension.

In scripture it tells us about praying for others with anointing oil, however, we must keep in mind that the 'oils' contain in and of themselves no special 'power'. The true power comes from above and lies only with Yahweh. Matthew clearly states in chapter 6 that Abba knows what we need before we even ask for it! In 1 John 5:14-15 it says "And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us: And if we know that He hears us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him". So before we go any further, let us know that we are to pray for HIS will to be done and surrender our own (Luke 22:42) - "Not MY will, but THINE"!

Ancient Preparations of Anointing Oils

From ancient times to modern, anointing oils are prepared from either simply using a bit of oil (usually olive) or it can be also infused (soaked) with flowers, herbs, resins, spices or any of a variety of other plants or botanicals. Many formulas were of course simple but many contained various complex ingredients which produced various aromatic odors. Since many formulas contained herbs, roots or bark, many of the formulas produced an aroma of earthy, balsamic odors, while some were spicy or sweet.

This practice of anointing with such perfumed oil was very common among many cultures as well as the Hebrews in the bible. We can see in the scriptures that anointing with oil was used for anointing kings  (Exodus 29:29; Leviticus 4:3) and this was equivalent to crowning him (1 Samuel 16:13; 2Sam 2:4, etc.). Prophets were anointed (1 Kings 19:16; 1 Chronicles 16:22; Psalms 105:15 ). Anointing oil was also used for healing and for a myraid of other reasons. Read Deut. 28:40 or Ruth 3:3. Psalms and Proverbs are full of references to anointing with oil.

Here are some additional scripture references for you to consider:

In Luke 7:38 and Luke 7:46 we can see that anointing was an act of hospitality; that anointingAromatherapy Jar Pendant oils could be perfumed and very expensive as in Solomon 4:10 and John 12:3. In Psalms 109, Mark 6 and James 5 we can see that oil was also used to anoint the sick or to help in the healing of wounds. Then in Isaiah 21:5 we see the expression "anoint the shield" which refers to the custom of rubbing oil on the leather of the shield to make it supple and fit for war. After reading this, it brought to mind my own act of rubbing my horse's bridle and reins and even saddle with oil to make it more pliable and comfortable for me and my horse. Now I understand where that custom comes from!

We also know that the bodies of the dead were anointed with perfumed oil such as in Mark 14:8 or Luke 23:56. In Esther we read about the purifying of the body by the Oil of Myrrh and Frankincense. We can also see that the Holy Anointing Oil (Ex. 30) was used specifically for consecration.

So as we can see, anointing oil was and should be a very intricate part of our lifestyle. Anointing oils do not need to be only used for 'special' purposes such as anointing kings, anointing the dead or even the Mashiach! Anointing oils should be used for everyday purposes - such as when you feel a cold coming on, a special event approaching or simply when you want to slow down and relax. Bottom line, it's time to dust off the dust-bunnies off that vial of wonderfully scented anointing oil from the shelf of your memories and begin to enjoy the essence of energies from Yah's Garden!
