Anointing oil and what it means

Learn more about how to use Anointing Oil and the Scriptural References

To be “anointed” is to be made sacred (consecrated); to be set apart and dedicated to serve Yahweh; to be endowed with enabling gifts and grace; to be divinely designated, inaugurated, or chosen for some purpose. This subject is extremely important to Yah because the words anoint, anointed, and anointing appear in more than 150 verses, including 22 New Testament Scriptures. Indeed, the English word anoint derives from the ancient Latin inunctus, meaning “smear with oil.”

In the Bible Dictionary it only mentions two types of anointing - with an oil, or with the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit).: with oil or the Holy Ghost.

Anointing OilBoth the ancient Hebrew form of Messiah and the ancient Greek form of Christ literally mean “anointed”; thus, "Yeshua Hamashiach" (Jesus Christ) is more accurately rendered “Yeshua the Anointed” (or as “Jesus, the Anointed One”, or “Jesus, His Anointed”). This is one of the reasons our Savior first publicly announced Himself as the divine Messiah [Luke 4:18] by quoting Isaiah 61:1: “The Spirit of Adonai ELOHIM is upon me, because ADONAI has anointed me…” It’s why Peter and John and the followers with them, inspired by the Holy Spirit, publicly refer to Jesus (Yeshua) as the “Anointed One” [Acts 4:26, NIV] and NKJ, NIV, and NAS Biblical versions translate: “Your holy Servant Jesus, whom you anointed”.

Our Abba must obviously be a lover of sweet-smelling fragrances and perfumes as those various forms appear in the context of scripture over 75 times! There are 16 verses which contain the word frankincense, 17 with myrrh, five with spikenard and many other that mention cinnamon, cassia, calamus, camphor, stacte, aloes, onycha, cedar, honey, hyssop, henna, mandrakes, pomegranates, lilies, roses, and saffron. As we study and begin to understand the deeper spiritual meanings of these exotic biblical fragrances and spices, it can only deepen our walk and our faith.

Anointing is mentioned throughout the bible - from the anointing of set apart pillars by our forefather's to the holy anointing oil of the finest of spices for the tabernacles in the wilderness. The exact recipe for this holy anointing oil for the tabernacle is not clearly understood today as the exact meaning of the 'calamus' could mean several different plants.

Other places where anointing is mentioned is in the lighting of the lamb stands, anointing of Aaron and his sons, the anointing of Kings and prophets, and of course who can forget the wonderful story of David? Read how a 'man after God's own heart' is officially anointed with oil not once, but three times in the book of Samuel and the many references to David and anointing oil in the Psalms.

Then switch books to the Book of Esther and read how the Queen in waiting had to undergo a year of preparations with six months of oil of myrrh and six months with perfumes and other aloes. Then proceed to Mary of Bethany and the Spikenard Oil. This is such a bittersweet story, but the symbolism in the giving of her all with the expensive perfume in the alabaster jar reminds us as followers of the Messiah to give our essence - our all! Mat. 26:61-13; Mark 14:3-9; John 12:3-5.

And who can forget the Magi from the east as they broght Frankincense and Myrrh to the child Messiah. Mat 2:11. Yeshua was also offered myrrh mixed with wine as he hung on the stake atAromatherapy Jar Pendant his crucifixion. Frankincense has come to be one with the prayers of the saints and myrrh with h is suffering and death. In the Song of Songs, it speaks of the 'bridegroom' as "who is He coming in a pillar of smoke smelling of myrrh & frankincense?”

According to Scripture, all believers in Yeshua are 'priests' (1 Peter 2:5,9) and kings ( Gal. 2:20) and therefore may not only be anointed, but anoint others with holy oil. Anointing typically symbolizes the Holy Spirit and those of us returning to our roots, realizing that we are part of the House of Israel may indeed partake of the ancient anointing ceremonies  of our ancestors!  Ruth 3:3; 2Ch. 28:15; Dan. 10:3; Amos 6:6, Mat. 6:17; James 5:14
